bog std MK2/3 digifant, or mk3 polo one will do.  MK3 Polo one fits under the car, if you get the bracket to go wirth it i bet you could make it fit neatly then wouldnt even see it ;)

Vauxhall vectra  injection we use - in line next to the strut . They are cheap about a tenner usually .

yeah thats a good idea chudd, thats where i plan to put the inline filter anyway but surely there must be some sort of filter between the tank and pump?? But all there is, is a rubber hose coming from the tank to the filter ? is there some sort of gauze filter in the tank becasue surely thats where the damage would be at the most likely to hit?? not before the fuel rail?? only a thought and tbh i would want to change that filter now the tank is all apart etc... thanks guys.

I would [and this is from personal experience] clean the tank out , make sure filler neck etc is clean and rust free . Then knowing that the tank is clean just run pump straight to filter from tank , they are so cheap after a few months chuck it and bob a new one on [i always cut the old ones open to see what sort of dirt has accumulated in it , after 1 filters and 3,000 miles they are now clean] . Make sure pump has small guaze filter in its end to catch any large bits that may fall in later , see my tank clean out post here for pics and text  The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

My fuel problem had even the rolling road lads telling me it was plugs , coils , fuel pressure reg ecu etc etc !!

the tintops have no inline filter, sometimes the main pump has a small mesh filter in the inlet end of the pump, but some dont.  the later cabby/rocco has a filter on the end of the lifter pump in the tank though

well the tanks all clean now, to be honest there was feck all in the way of crud in the ank which i was quite happy to see. Now looking at my pump there is no filter there at all so im going to put a small filter on the line that goes from the tank to the pump? as well as the inline filter further up the line, more for peice of mind sake than anything.
