I little guidance on my chugging please

I have a 1.1 golf which is having some issues I, was wondering if I could get some guidance on.

I have not used the car very much in the last few month and it was off the road to get a new carb.

Now back on the road it drove OK for one journey but is now chugging and cutting out.

After journey one the filter was empty and it took quite a bit of work and putting petrol straight into the carb to get the car restarted, once it did the filter filled up and off I went.  A half mile down the road the car started to chug / kangaroo pretty violently (at 30-40mph).  The car eventually cut out and I was able to restart it but any acceleration at all was met with serious chugging - I drove back home with the clutch out and no acceleration (very slowly) and here the car sits.

Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

The car has a new fuel tank, new carb and I am pretty sure it has a new fuel pump too.

Any help and wisdom gratefully recieved.

Hi, what is the condition of the filler neck? Is the carb setup properly?  :D

LMAO had not noticed that, might get me the wrong type of attention…or none at all.

A mechanic friend has suggested a few things

1. Fitting a condenser might fix it.
2. that the points might not be set up properly, I am no expert - but this is a problem with the distributor?
3. that despite looking new there might be a problem with the fuel pump
4. an airlock so to try driving with the fuel cap off to see if it happens again
5. there is a problem with the immobilisor and this is messing with the electrics and causing the problem.

Any or all of these sound like things worth checking?

Filler neck, I dont know, but will check.

Carb is new, smells rich, might not be set up perfectly but problem seems to be fueling in the sense that if you pour petrol into the carb it gets it going - so the problem is likely to be before that - i.e a problem with the pump?

EDIT:

I just found a very similar thread (apologies) someone may wish to merge them?

The other thread prompted me to add that while the mechanis was working on it he seemed to find that sometimes it would spark and sometimes it would not….does this narrow down the problem any?

Coil is on the list of things the mechanic wants to check which include

Condenser
Pump
Coil
Distributor

That sound about right?
