jack car up as high as you can! axle stand with wood on them at back of sills i did,
undo your hand brake cables inside the car, pull them through so they underneath car
undo flexi brake lines from the solids, they pass through the rear axle,
put a jack under rear axle to support it so it doesnt drop on you
slacken the bolts that go through the bottom of shocker,
undo the 2 big nuts on each side of the rear axle, located very back of the sill,
undo rear shocker bolts,
and lower to floor and move out way,
on to the tank….
remove pipe from filler kneck to fuel tank,
remove breathers that you will see, run along side of tank,
if you have a lift pump like i did, use that with a pipe on it to syphon all fuel out of tank,
then disconnect the pipes and wires from lift pump
there are 2 straps that hold your tank in, which run ront to back,
undo the bolts al front of the vehicle, straps should then hang down, and they have a hook in other side, so just un hook those,
i managed to get mine out with out taking my back box off!! just got my mate to lever it out way as it flexed a small amount on rubbers.
once old tank out take lift pump out and fit it in new tank, so the hole is filled and no crap lands inside,
hope that helps, chris

The exhaust rear section needs to come off to remove the tank, so you may as well delay this job until you've resolved the fuel tank issue, or combine the 2 jobs together.

Basically, the job varies a lot depending on how good condition existing components are. I've had a 1984 car where everything came off-on smoothly and it was no hassle, and I've seen other cars where I've spent days grinding seized bolts away with a Dremel, bodges like the axle directly welded to the body, etc.

Just thought i'd join in as just done my tank. From memory i didnt take the axle off fully. Just undid the break lines and the big axle bolts and angled the whole lot down at the front. This gave enough clearance to get the tank out! I put some poly bushes on whilst i was at it!
