Help Please NON STARTER

I have recently purchased a Golf GTI 16V G-Reg 1.8 to restore
Since getting it back home I can not get it started.
It has been stood for approx 6 months.
I re-charged the battery and the engine turns but will not kick in.
I think it may be a fuel problem as i have applied fuel directly to the spark plugs and it kicks over for a few seconds.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
