help needed with starting

hello i drive a 1981 gti engine code eg i have a problem starting the car cranks over but will not start onless you floor the accelerator then it will start on the third try once the car as started it sounds like its running on three cylinders for 5 - 10 seconds then runs fine this problem happens on hot and cold starting i have replaced the injectors and had the fuel tank cleaned out buy a local garage who told me it could be the fuel pump i thought it could be the fuel accumulator as they cause hot start problems any ideas   :dontknow:

Not having a fuel accumulator causes hot start problems.

As you say it could be the fuel accumulator that has got rust from the tank in it this would cause both hot and cold start problems, but if it runs ok after a while its unlikely to be this.

More likely its a problem with plugs or distributor, also could be timing is out so check that 1st and see how you go on.

Plugs you can check by removing a lead one at a time(turn engine off in-between) and see if the noise changes or even if it wont start at all.

Sounds like its too rich, since its at starting but then runs okay I'd suspect the 5th injector or the thermo time switch.
