It's a bayonet fitting in the tank - you need to tap it with a hammer and a screwdriver / chisel / drift one way or the other to remove it. Be careful as there's petrol and/or vapour underneath, so no smoking etc!

There's a rubber o-ring between the sender plate and the tank which can perish over time, so you may need to replace it.

With respect - DON'T HIT IT WITH CHISELS OR A DRIFT. I found out that this is a really good way of snapping them.

I dreamt up a great way of doing it easily.

I've jammed different tools in, probably not such a good fit as the 3/8 ratchet and ext bar, but with more or less the same effect. Just be grateful its summertime - in wintertime when its cold, that particular type of plastic is very brittle and easily snaps even with the most careful attempt to remove!

Mine's a tintop so it has a metal sender unit - didn't realise the cabby ones were plastic…

The method with the ratchet and extension bar looks really neat…

All replacement senders are plastic now. At least one less thing to rust in the tank!
