GTI fuel pump in line pre filte

Has any one fitted an inline pre filter to a MK1 GTI ?
Just rebuilt my GTI fitted a new pump but some debris out of the tank went through the pump and jammed it. Wondered if any one had fitted a pre filter maybe off another car, any pictures would be a great help.

Cheers

I had the same problem. Even though I had the tank off and swilled out all the muck I could, some still stopped in the tank due to recessed lips of the sender and in/outlet holes. I think hoovering it out with an air line as suggested on here might have been more effective. The bits jammed my pump too! I think the Bosch ones are more susceptible than other (Pierburg?) ones. The mesh filter in the tank didn?t seem to make any difference.

I found the biggest in-line plastic filter I could from an autojumble and plumbed it in. I put it in place of the short 90degree rubber hose that goes in-between the tank and pump. Space is very tight so I had to use some fuel hose and make loop about a foot across. Tank-hose-filter-hose-pump. I cable tied up it to I think the pump housing or some suitable convenient point under there!

This stopped the pump jamming and after about 2yrs/8000 miles I removed it and replaced the original hose. It?s been OK since.

Thanks mate,

I did something similar during the rebuild to get the engine up & running, I managed to find an injection filter off a new jag that was tapped m16 so was large bore made up some hose adaptors and simply tie wrapped it to the rear beam, then fit some long hoses, so now I am looking at a more permanent soloution, will probably use the same filter but to reduce the large hose bends I have seen some 1/2" steel 180 degree bends that are used on oil coolers, will carry out a trial fir and see if it will fit somewhere aroung the fuel accumulator.
