golf clipper fuel probs!!!

i have read quite a few other posts and can't seem to find waht i am looking for. Apologies if there is a recent post the same.
Here we go…
i have had the car for around three months now (its a 1.8 carb engine  with a weber carb on it (not sure what one though)) and it has started to splutter and then eventually stall when i have been driving. i had a little read about and changed the filter, as it looked quite dirty, went out again and it did the same thing.
I know there is the pump near the air filter, but is there another one oand if there is should i change the one near the filter first and what sort of price are they??
sorry for the essay, any help much appreciated!! Stuart

mate i had the same problem, you HAVE rust in your tank, it took me 4 months and alot of money to sort this problem out.

you can get a new tank from gsf, euro car parts, or try crazyquiff,

when you change the tank get yourself a new fuel filler neck as they rust like mad

cheers

get the problem properly diagnosed before you start changing tanks, this isnt the cheapest or easiest job in the world,so get it looked at first,i have changed filler necks due to rust, but never a mk1 tank on any of the many cars i have owned,if the tank is checked and found to be full of rust, drop a magnet into the tank through the guage sender unit, (access under rear seat) and run it round for a week then check it for bits.

I HAVE THIS VERY PROBLEM!!!!

I have just fitted the weber 32/34 to try resolve the problem, but after about 8miles (the furthest its ever gone without probs!) it cut out.

When changing the carb I reused the heater element as instructed in the manual, but the connection looked pretty flimsy and I'm sure this should be a sealed unit?

If anyone can advise I'd be most grateful!

VW list 171 201 129 F as the correct filler neck for a 90 Cab, why does the one you've got not fit?

Sounds like you could have rust/dirt in the fuel tank, have you checked the condition of your fuel filler neck etc? These sort of running problems often get mis-diagnosed as carb problems, when its often the other end of the system.

To help diagnose rust in the tank, put a magnet on the underside of the tank and try a little drive. take off the cap on the top and see what its got!

My old clipper had this exact same problem. I had to buy a new filler neck, tank, fuel lines, fillter and pump!!!

To be honnest you can clean the tank but its a bloody nightmare!

I would highly recommend a stainless filler neck or coating it heavly with underseal or hammerite as this is a classic problem!

miss fire

Hello Chaps, this week i have had an issue with my cab she seems fine on light throttle but under hard acceleration or motorway journeys she has a loss in fuel and get a miss fire and grinds to a halt not good on the M4. she has a new filler neck and tank as well as having the lines cleaned out and an inline fuel filter fitted, she also runs a manual choke weber carb, since the tank etc went in she has done 2500 miles and has been ok, is it common for the mechanical fuel  pump to become weak, this wasnt replaced but looked new.
Can any one help.

Cheers Chalk
