getting into petrol tank???

when trying to get into petrol tank, the white plastic cap? is there any particular way in which to remove this ie special tools??? was scared incase i broke it so didnt attempt to remove it!! also are there washers that will need replaced if i do remove it???? trying to check the fuel pick up is not blocked!! regards ailsa x

There are special tools available if you really want to buy them, but I've found that a screwdriver or two can be wedged in the 'slots' and turned. It shouldn't be that tight, its not a thread or anything, just a seal you're pressing/rubbing against.

PS its quite easy to break, especially in winter/cold weather when the plastic is more brittle.

Not too hard to replace, obviously its best to use a new seal. Just be careful its seated properly because its an easy way to generate a leak you never had before! They cost around ?10-20, depends if its a GTI (level sensor only) or carb (level sensor and fuel pickup too).
