Ordered one from GSF and it came in a box with 'Made in Taiwan' on it. Despite sanding it back to bare metal and coating with three coats of smoothrite, schultzing the underside, etc, I just couldn't bring myself to fit it to the car. Ended up finding a good 2nd hand one and cleaning that up instead. Maybe a bit mad, but don't like the idea of 'made in Taiwan' on my car (!)
If I were you I'd unscrew the sender from the tank (you can get to it via access hole plate in bodywork), and see what you can fish out from there (or flush out with parrafin). New sender seal recommended too as they can leak or cause (the somewhat common on Mk1's) petrol smells.
Cheers,
Mark

Know what you mean mark about 'made in Taiwan' However, you'd be surprised how good quality can be from there now. I supplied industrial robotics (amongst some other, exciting machinery!! ) some years ago from a company in Taiwan - quality was 1st rate and the shocker was when they even started to buy parts in from China as they were too expensive in Taiwan!!

cheers gusy forgot to add

the cars runing a 16v on twin carbs no return using a gtiinjection tank

i fished out ones and tones of rust from the bottom of the tank(where the filter is )

ive replaced the fuel line fuel pump and fuel regulator and blown into the big breather (heard bubbles in the tank so sume thats ok

but alas no fuel pressure at all so im asuming that theres rust in the swirl pot blocking the 10mm output to the edge of the tank ?

im not sure how i could get all tyhis rust out  i tried a magnet and that got loads?

im thinkign drain the tank and blow my air line through it then  wash through with water jet spray?

Word of warning - Stealth ordered one for me when I got my MK1 from GSF and it did not fit properly (or the 2nd one). But, although a VW stealership said they did not stock them they ordered one anyway and it arrived and fitted like a glove!  Was a lot more expensive though. Good luck.

Sounds like you got yours cheap !  I swapped tanks about 18mths / 2yrs ago and ?250 was about what VW wanted then. Think the GSF one was about ?70. 2nd hand one was about ?10 (!)
