fueling problems

Hey all im after some advice if possible ive converted my 84 a reg mk1 1.1 to a g60 ive had it running and no problems till last nite i noticed petrol/fumes coming from the breather pipe. When on with the conversion i changed the carb tank for a gti and the pump, i was reading before about a accumlator (excuss spelling) do i need to fit one of these to my car ? Atm i have the the filler neck connected then one 1/2" pipe and the breather, return line connected to the tank. I was thinking the tank was maybe being over pressured as when i remove the fuel cap the fumes/petrol stop as so when the cap is on i can hear the tank sounds like bubbling ? the tankk is only 3/4 full :dontknow:

Sounds like you've muddled up the connections for the GTI fuel tank somehow. The fuel tank never pressurises, it does have a slight vacuum in normal use (engine running), which is the "whoosh" you hear when you remove the filler cap. The slight vacuum is for emissions reasons.

I don't know if you need the accumulator or not, maybe not because its much lower pressure if you're still using the G60 management, etc. What fuel pump are you using and where is it located, etc? Might be that you need the accumulator after all, but its not related to the fuel leakage.

ive fit a gti pump wth bracket under the car and ive checked all the connections are right i just dont know what to try

If all the connections are right, then its possible you've got a blocked breather - I assume its the one within the rear wheelarch?

is that the one which the feed breather from the tank goes to the black breather which goes down and runs on the seem of the tank?

is it possible to block off the small breather pipe and just use the large one ?

There's only one breather, there is no small and large one. Check the pipe connections by comparing it with the parts diagram. The breather part is the same as a carb fuel tank anyway. (The only variation is if the car has a carbon canister). The large pipe you think is a breather, might be the fuel filler neck overflow pipe. On the GTI there is a small breather pipe near the top of the tank, which goes up into the wheelarch, into a breather device, then a tube goes down again and clips onto the edge of the tank.

Right i get you now  :oops:  ive disconnected everything to check for damage etc everything seems fine, do you know how often/much vapour should come out of the breather pipe ? its doing it all the time.

Yep - almost none!

I can't see why your tank would overflow fuel, or leak it out of a breather, since its a negative pressure in the tank.

hhhmm back to the drawing board  :banghead: i was talking to someone before who said just to block the breather pipe off! i didnt really take to the opinion, i changed the ecu the other day i wonder if that has anything to do with it ?

TBH I'd need to see the car. Not everyone converts their 1.1 to a G60. I have no idea how you've connected things up regarding the fuelling, but something's not right and the car isn't really safe if its leaking fuel, etc.

Right what would be the dangers caused if the breather was blocked up ?

I'd just unblock the breather, don't really do "what if" scenarios. Basically, the engine would probably only run for 5-6 mins because the pump would be trying to implode the fuel tank, and eventually not be able to pump fuel properly. Or something like that.

I think the breather is a red herring though, nothing to do with your current fault.
