Fuel Tanks

Right i'm having a problem. I'm trying to get this running and put it through its mot. Done the full service including cambelt. It had a new webber carbs fitted bu not set up and also fitted a new fuel pump just make sure its running sweat. I think the petrol tank is rusty as hell and its starving the engine off fuel. I keep taking it down the road and its cutting out on me :( Can someone please advise?
Cheers

Take the back seat up, open top of tank and check for rust.

Check filler neck also. Is it cab or tintop.

Also what engine/webbers? If twin webbers (guessing with you saying carbs?) what pump you running and how's the pressure controlled?

Ill have a look later to see if there is any rust. My Golf is a cab D reg 1987. I don't know much about engines so couldn't tell you what webbers its running. I don't mind taking pictures. My car is 1.6GL if that helps.

Is there just the one carb on there at the back? A pic should help, confused with the fuel pump going on, inj had fuel pump at back but if they're twin webbers than a pump is needed.

If you check tank, shine a torch in to see clearly. Checking the filler should give you an indication to rust in tank.

Normal webber it's ok. Check the tank. Failing that may need a good set up hence starvation when driving.

No shame here, If you find you have a rusty tank, I have one il sell cheap ;)

Sorry for sounding dum as I don' know much. Its my first mk1 and i'm just gagging to get it on the road.

Ill have to investigate the petrol tank later and if I do change it i it best to do the filler neck too?

Is it hard to do?

Many thanks for your help Brad, cheers

The filler neck is easier than tank, as the tank requires rear beam dropping and if bolts are seized that's the trouble. If not your laughing, 4bolts to drop the beam then it's around 5-6 bolts for tank and the tank straps, it's free then, take hoses off top first though, you'll see these later when checking tank.

May aswell do filler too, depends on your budget and will, it's a job outbid the way in my eyes.

It's ok mate.
