fuel pump strange noises

had a little run out today, and on return i noticed my fuel pump was loose on its mountings and making a strange whirring , tapping noise, loud enough to hear from inside the car,
do i need a new one do you think,
if so would my mk2 donor cars fuel pump fit and will it make any difference to how the engine is set up
thanks guys

!!!!!

I think you summed it up there matey!!!  :D

They normally tend to "go" so quickly, you don't hear any noises. Sounds like you caught yours saying its final goodbyes!

I got a replacement from GSF - About ?80. Looks ok and has not given me any probs yet (just over 2 years old).

Do a quick check to make sure you power to the pump before you shell out though…

Think the Mk2 has different sized/type connections for the fuel lines…
Not 100% though so you caould have a look. They have the same K-Jet system at the end of the day, so fuel pressure etc would be ok!?!  :dontknow:

if you want one from VW (not sure if the GSF one is the same Bosch or a different make) they were ?87 when I got mine last year

Looking at the pictures on VW's EKTA parts catalogue, the pumps are very different so I DON'T think that they are interchangable.
The feed pipe from the tank goes directly into the filter on the cabby, but goes into the pump housing on the Mk2.
They are also different part numbers and the Mk2 looks to have some sort of strange strainer attathed to it, dunno what thats all about. :dontknow:
Cabby part no. 171 906 091 A, Priced at ?120.00 +vat from VW and its on a good discount code to them, so do some pleading and you may get at least 10% off recomended retail, which aint bad for a genuine part with two year warranty.
Mk2 part no. 191 906 091 A
Or you could just get one from GSF.

So they can just give up and die that easily? mine will idle all day and rev too but as soon as you put it in gear it just coughs and splutters and dies! Could this be the fuel pump? :dontknow:

just had exactly the same problem on mine - would idle all day but not rev at all under load , fuel pump making strange noises . Check the short fuel pipe that runs between the pump and tank , on mine a dented tank had lead to this pipe and the pump becoming full of grit , would flow enough for a good idle but not anything else . Dont check that pipe if youve a full tank of fuel as you'll be sat there with jerry cans all day .
Ended up having to fit a new tank , pipe , filter and pump as well as blowing out all the fuel lines with a high pressure hose , expensive but its worth it - it runs really well now .

I've had all these symptoms (idle all day aqnd fail under load) initially I put a new pump on, problem still there. Eventually changed the rusty tank and filler pipe, everything O.K, though there isnt a filter in the end of the pump fitted on mine, like to see photos of your filter Douglove

I got the pipe from my local vw dealer . The filter only seems to be fitted to pierburg pumps ive just checked an old bosch one that dosent have it, and my new GSF pump dosent have a filter either . Might try to remove it from the pierburg clean it and fit it to the new pump as its better to have more filters than you need - having said that everythings now new so i shouldent have any worries anyway . 5 4 3 2 1 now ive done it , gone and put a hex on the whole darn thing .
