fuel pump relay - should it purge the fuel system

Hi

golf gti mk1
im i right or wrong in saying when you initially switch on the ignition the fuel pump relay should purge the fuel system briefly to take the fuel injection system up to pressure
I think i remember many moons ago My mk1 at the time did purge the system
My recently purchased mk1 does not do this .It takes a few turns of the starter to start in the morn after that it starts first turn of the engine
Do i require a new fuel pump relay??

thanks in advance

it is supposed to purge the system for what it costs i'd get a new relay to be on the safe side.

I know a lot of people say that the system is "priming" or "purging" when it comes on with the key, but that is not the case really. It just comes on and then waits for the engine to start. If the relay does not recieve the coil signal in a few seconds then you will have to switch the key off and back on to start the engine. The system is sealed and does not need any purging or priming. If any air gets in then there is a problem somewhere that requires fixing. I'm not starting a campaign to stop the purging/priming talk, just want to be sure people don't really think that that is what it is doing.

GF isnt it supposed to prime to build up pressure for the 5th injector?
say if car had been left off for months there would be no fuel pressure at all, so if you started cranking it over it would take a second for the pressure to build up enough for the 5th inj?  I know that when cranking the pump does activate, but would this kick in quick enough?

If you install a pressure gauge on the system you will discover two things, or at least two things. One is that as soon as you turn the key and power hits the pump the pressure is there before you can blink your eyes. Second is that if you leave the car sit for a day, days or even a month there will be pressure in the system (provided it is in good condition). That is one reason you have to cover any fuel line connections with a rag at the salvage yards because you could get a face full of gasoline even if the car has sat for a while. Its not like a lawnmower that you have to pump the little rubber bulb to get fuel to the carb before pulling the cord.

a g*f relay makes the pump work prior to starting, a vw relay will not make the pump work prior to starting. i've had problems with the non original relay in the past, in that they don't last long, the quality of construction is poor. the tracks on the pcb are as thin as silver foil paper and will peel off by hand!stick with the original vw fuel relay.

i have noticed no difference on starting noise or no noise.
