fuel pump question.

hi guys..ive got a problem with my fuel pump its knackered..problem is  ive seen a few on ebay but none of em look like the one ive got..its on an 81 gli cabby..the engine code is EG..underneath my car the fuel pump is in what looks like a plastic box with the cylindrical pump inside that wrapped in foam..the pumps ive seen look like cans..is that what is inside the plastic box and the foam coating? i assume my pump is knackered..ive got 12v going to it.but my car doesnt start. or if it does it will run at about 1000rpm for a minute and if i rev it up it dies at about 1500..cheers

Are you sure it's the fuel pump? Could be faulty injectors, blocked fuel lines, rubbish in the tank or even an electrical fault. My advice is to check the injectors first and work back.

dont think its electrical..like i said its got 12v going to it..and it used to make a really loud whining sound..it doesnt do that any more..but ill take your advice ill have a look at the injectors..ive heard that they can be tricky to pull out?

If you suspect the tank, you could by pass it and feed a rubber pipe to the fuel pump via a petrol can.

If it starts at all, let alone runs, then your pump was working.
They tend to give all or nothing, rather than intermittent failiure.

My money is on you still having a problem - Sorry…
Keep us updated though…

arghhh

think it was an electrical problem....still knackered tho..and after my dad shorted a wire across the battery terminal there is nothing going to the new pump...what could be causing the lack of voltage going to the pump??

Bad fuel pump relay or relay control or wiring problem

relay

found out why the fuel pump voltage was intermittent..looks like all the rubbish that had built up in my glovebox was pressing down on the relay and pushing it out of its socket..emptied glovebox and voltage now ok...back to the original problem i had with the car now.i replaced the coil with one i had from a shell of a mk1 1.6 cabby with a carb engine..after i put this on she started ..sounded better but she still wont go above 1100-1200 rpm. if i try it she just cuts out..can restart her every time tho..anybody got any idea what this is?

still it happened at the right time of year for me to work on it..if this happened in november hed be in the garage for months.

right..i can get her to idle as i said before. but ive noticed if i press the brake pedal she cuts out. could this be something to do with the vacumn or something? if there is a problem there it might explain why i cant rev her up  as there is no vacumn advance on the timing? dont understand too much but i have been reading up on this…it will be fixed!!! :banghead:

did you change the pump or just test it on a battery? i would say it sounds like a weak failing pump, a pump off the car may still pump and appear fine, its a different matter on the car.

pump

i actually replaced the pump, and ive got the same symptoms as before, one of my mates had a look at it for me, he started it up and let it run for a minute or two from cold,he turned it off, then unscrewed the coolant tank when he did this you could hear a hissing sound like pressure escaping,,water wasnt hot at all,my mate said the head gasket may be knackered, hope its not,,anyone know if thats likely, and if its a big job?

The water system is pressurised so I think that is a red herring.  Always useful to get a compression check to verify

Fuel pump

Your symtoms indicate:

Timing is out
Fuel blockage
Breather problems
Airleak or Incorrect mixture
Faulty hall sender (dizzy)
Faulty iginition module (see haynes for quick test)
Low fuel pressure (faulty pump)

I have had a faulty pump which allowed the car to start but would miss, backfire and stall when driven, as volkswarren mentioned they can die slowly, but you would be unlucky to have pair if you have changed it.  You say you have done injector test does it act like video below.  Also had dizzy problem but this would just die instantly, tacho dropping to zero.

Does it start ok after it has died or do you have to wait before it will start again?

thanks for the video! my injectors behave exactly the same as the ones on the video..that squeaky spooky noise is very familiar..
it will start again after dying, and will idle smoothly i can increase the rpm slowly but as soon as she reaches the 1200rpm mark she cuts out..the pump seems ok the injectors pumped out a lot of petrol when i tested them   just like the video..do you think it could be some kind of air /breather   problem? because  the fuel delivery seems ok? any help is greatly appreciated guys..thanks for the replies :D

fixed it

the alternator was broken wasnt putting out enough power to keep the car sparking at higher revs.
