fuel pump not turning on? also wipers won't stop?
on my golf gti cabriolet the fuel pump won't turn on, but I have put voltage to it direct with a wire I made up with fuse inline and turns on, so makes me think its the relay rather than the pump, fuse in fusebox seems ok, what do you think? and how much are they?
Also my front wipers won't stop, doesn't this mean the park position is screwed, so probably the wiper arm on steering wheel faulty, or possibly wiper motor, what do you think and which would you change first? can get a motor for 20 and arm for 10-15.
Also does anyone know how much 6 months road tax is for a gti cabriolet 1989 model, as I have only just got mine and tax run out?
Thanks very much in advance,
Matt

Depends on which relay you need for the fuel pump. I know Volksparts had the early relay with the fuse piggybacked to the top I think it was @£25 back in December.

to fit mk2/3 motor you need to cut a length o loom off the donor car, crimp some spades on it then push into the mk1 plug matchign the wire colours. it has 1 mounting missing but its not needed
with the pump, first check the red/black wires to the coil, these supply the rev counter and the fuel pump relay. does the rev counter jiggle on the dash while its cranking?
if all that checks out swap the relay for a 53 relay pinched off another car in the scrappy. if the pump then comes on with the ignition, you know its the relay or the coil feed. GSF sell the proper k-jet relay:
935VG0090 - k-jet relay - £23.20

fuel pump
Regarding the fuel pump, I didn't expalin well enough, there are 2 fuel pumps in the golf, 1 is the one under rear seats, which is the pump that outputs the fuel from the tank, other is under rear of car near back wheels, which pumps fuel to engine. the fuel pump under car wasn't coming on, tested relay and fuse ok, so then put voltage with fuse inline from fusebox to pump in tank so constant supply of fuel was coming through, this way the car runs, so guessing this pretty much sums up that the fuel pump under car is screwed, right???
If so how much is a new one and how much is a second hand one?
Thanks,
Matt

take the relay out of the socket, and put a chunky wire between the 2 large terminals on the socket, if pump comes on its the relay. they can click and make all the right noises, but then not work when under load. you can pop a 53 relay in that socket too, this will bring the pump on with the ignition. its not 100% safe as in a crash pump wont cut out, but it'll get you going
