fuel pump not getting 12v feed UPDATE now popping the fuse

ok as it says in the title,

basically coming home yday and the car just lost all power, tryed starting it again but was only cranking but not firing. anyways called AA this morning and he checked for spark which was ok, then sprayed easy start(i think) on the throttle body and it was starting while i was cranking the car and he was spraying.

so then he checked if the pump was getting a feed and it wasnt so he said this is my prob and he wernt sure which relay to check.

anyways so could it be the relay?? and can i test it the same way you test to see if it primes? and if its not the relay what else could it be?

and may sound stupid but does the pump always have a 12v feed when the cars running??

thanks in advance

Yes, the pump will always have a 12v feed when the engine's running - cos it needs fuel at pressure,t o run

fuel pump relays havea 5th terminal which it a trigger from the col (same feed as rev counter)

sounds like relay gone - check by bypassing the 2 big terms

sorry i meant the pump.

and just wanted to ask why would the relay all of a shudden fail like that.

btw the pump wenrt priming for a while so has this somthing to do with that?

and just to confirm the furl pump relay is the 4th one from the left and on the top?

thanks

Pump buzzing is a bad way to indicate if its running or not. Most pumps run very quietly, buzzing means its on its way out or dirt/rust clogged in it somewhere. Relays just fail, esp if cheep ounes1

what car is it?

have a look in the fuse box the fuel pump relay has an inline fuse (blue one 10a?)  if this fuse has blown your car won't start so check that.

if thats ok i could be the relay itself may need soldering.

try that let us know what happens

ok got a relay and the car started but car still does not prime

but new problem today :banghead:

right went shopping come out, start car and nothing just kept on cranking, so pulled the fuel pump relay tapped it on the dash put it back in and it started.

got onto the main road and the car just stopped so tryed the same thing as i did before but nothing anyway called the AA as i was in a dangerous area, turns out it only the fuse,

so on my way home and car cuts out again lucky i had a bag of fuse put a other 15amp fuse in and on my way again 2 mins after pop again fuse gone again so got pissed off and put a 35amp fuse in as i was 5mins away from home.

so why is it popping the fuse??

AA guy said it might be a faulty relay so gona buy a new one tomorrow, other then that he said my pump might be on its way out but try a new relay first

and is it ok to drive around with a 35amp fuse in   :dontknow:

shouldnt put any more than a 15a in it.

gsf do new relays, i think they're less than a tenner.

good luck

I think its been suggested already - try a NEW relay. I suppose its possible that a dodgy fuel pump would keep blowing fuses, but I'd have thought it (fuel pump) either works, or doesn't.

got a new relay today and now the car primes.

but as i used all my 15amp fuse got used up i have put a 20amp for now till i get aother 15amp

my last pump started blowing fuses just before it died - I had rubbish coming through from the tank.  The extra load of trying to get the bits through the small pump mechanism inside was enough to pop fuses.  That was untill there was just too much c**p and the pump seized, at which point it was constantly popping them without pumping at all.  (being quite inquisitive I took the old one apart to see what had happened/if it could be salvaged!)

Fuel pump relay price

You got a part number and price for that relay and does it have the fuse on it?
