fuel pump humming

hello all, got a problem with my gti cab  - fuel pump is humming away like a canary on crack! have already flushed tank and replaced fuel filter - it was kangaroo hopping too but now that problem is solved. which pump do i need to look at, the one in tank or the main pump? do i need to start looking for a replacement, if so how much money to replace and where are best places to look for…would a breakers part suffice?
thanks all.

Which one is noisy ? You should be able to tell when car is running .

fuel pump humming

Thanks for replies.  I'm not sure which one, all i know is the noise is coming from the rear of the car..obviously where the pump is. I know there is one in the tank too but could you hear this?? I had the tank flushed out of any crap and some fuel tank cleaner put in and i was told to give it a few days for the stuff to work. I'm just concerned that maybe the pump's not quite knackered but if i keep drivng it, its obviously working overtime or struggling to pump fuel through that it will eventually burn out completely! Just thinking about it, when they put the cleaner in, my fuel line was just below quarter and there was no noise…then  6 miles later i put some fuel in about and 2 mins later…humming again..so maybe the stuff is swishing around and flushing out more crap….or am i talking out my @rse!! thanks all

From my own experience and others I've heard on here - humming fuel pump normally means it's on it's way out - that said mine buzzed for ages before it broke but it could well be the case.

Anyway, check the other, cheaper items first!

FUEL PUMP

hello again, further to my earlier post - just found out the garage didn't flush my tank out - they just put some fuel tank cleaner in..which would possibly explain the reason that there was no noise up until i added fuel to the tank, may have dislodged some more crap!! been told to run it a few days and see what happens….

Worth checking the fuel pump mounting, as they can make a noticable buzzing/humming noise if not mounted properly. The pump should sit in a foam boot, in a basket suspended with rubber mounts to isolate vibration. However, the basket etc often corrodes, falls apart and the pump ends up being lashed to the chassis leg (which it vibrates agaist) with cable ties. Mine was like this and you could hear it buzzing in the car, much quieter now properly mounted.

fuel pump humming

hello all, well so far all this week it hasn't made a sound!!! i guess i did have crap in my tank and the fuel cleaner is doing it's job..i can only presume there was a bit blocking the fuel line somewhere. maybe if i fill up again i may get some noise again as more crap is dislodged but hopefully this will soon dissolve and i can drive in peace! possibly worth noteing for anyone experiencing the same problem, maybe (fingers crossed) i was lucky! thanks for all your feedback!
