fuel Pipe fittings

Hi,

i have a slightly strange request that i hope that someone here can help me with.  I am in the process of fitting a mk1 GTI engine into a VW T2 campervan and need to fit the fuel system.  I have all the parts from the golf but the solid fuel lines are in porr condition and much too long as are any replacements so i am going to make them in copper/nickel.  I do however need to know the diameter of the pipes (i think its 10mm is that right?) and wonder if you know who sells the pipe fittings for them that i need to fit the pipes to the accumilator, fuel pump and fuel filer.  I am going to use a pipe flaring kit so it is just the connectors.

i hope that makes sense and you can help me.

cheers,

shaun

Hi Shaun

You'll find everything you need at Automec - nice folks to deal with::

http://www.automec.co.uk/frame_set.html

iirc the Fuel pipe is 8mm dia.  Use the Copper/nickel pipe and try to get the bends correct first time.  Copper & Copper/Nickel "work harden" so will need to be heated to a dull red and quenched in water to re-anneal them if they go difficult to bend.  Use of a bending tool is recommended to avoid kinks in the pipes.

25ft Coil of 8mm Cu/Ni will cost you about £38 : vs Cu at about £28 for 25ft

Copper will "work harden" also due to vibration will can ultimately result in a fracture of the pipe…for this reason copper/nickel (cupronickel) is recommended - its also better than much else in a seawater environment so if you live by the coast, or where your local council bothers to salt the roads, this is also recommended for your brake pipes.  Doesn't cost that much more than copper either!

The fittings will be 10mm and Automec supply these in brass (yipee - no rot!)

Thanks for that.  Are all the fittings 10mm.  The ones on the accumilator look like different sizes.  does anyone know the exact size / thread type of these connectors?

cheers

Hi Shaun

I just dug out one of my olde fuel pipe (male) connectors and it is 14mm by 1.5mm thread.

Although Automec don't list these on their website, they do have them as they were already fitted to the swaged set that I bought from them a while back - you'll need to speak with them directly (phone no. on website)

IIRC the rest are similar sized but I'll check tomorrow if I get the time.

The pipe was 8mm OD

Sorry about the ref. to 10mm connectors - pure BS!

If you can provide the required lengths, Automec will make up to length and flare the pipes for you - better at it than you or I methinks!

Cheers
