Fuel injection system reset????

I have just had my Campaign in the local VW garage for a full service. They have told me that it requires its fuel injection system resetting.

Is this likely? What does it involve? And how much should it be costing me?

You advice would be greatly appreciated.

They may mean electronically re-setting the fuel injection, which is not possible on a mk1 unlike modern cars. MK1 fuel injection is mechanical and has no ECU and therefore can not be re-set. It can simply be tuned with regard to mixture and idle (may be they mean this :dontknow: ). Further than this you get into pressure testing and checking componant condition.

What is actually wroing with the car, you don't mention any running problems, are the emissions ok? Ask what re-ssetting involves and how much it will cost/long it will take.

Not wanting to soudn to cynical, but was it your local VW main stealer? In my experience they just try and sting you for as much money as possible, and often don't seem to know older VW's that well..

Thanks for the info.

The car is runnng fine and passed its MOT a couple of months ago so I guess the emissions must be ok too.

It is not a main dealer but a "VW Specialist". I haven't used them before and thought I would give them a try. Not too impressed so far.

I will ask them some more questions.

If your car is running fine and passed it emissions test, they will need a good reason as to why they should fiddle with the fuel injection. Defintely ask them more questions as to why they think it evn needs the work and if in doubt get another opinion.

Good luck

Right….

I have spoken to the mechanic (he didn't seem very happy with my questioning).

By "resetting" he means attaching the car to his "CO2 machine". It needs this because it is running lean which is causing a popping noise in the exhaust. From this he will be able to adjust the mixture to make it run smoother.

He is going to charge me ?25 for this.

Does this sound realistic or am I better off keeping my ?25?

Keep your ?25.

If it was that far out it would have failed its MOT.
As for popping in the exhaust…

Adjusting the mixture will take him about 2 mins. Thats an hourly rate of ?750!

I'd be telling him where to stick his CO machine

He is right that popping on the overrun (actually sounds quite good  ) indicates a lean mixture. Mine did when it came back from an MOT. Assume they had leaned it off a bit to get it through the emissions although quite rightly they didn't charge me, only takes a minute or two. I just richened the mixture by a quarter turn or two and it dissappeared, just scrapped through the emissions next time.

Could be the same happened to your mk1 at an MOT. If he richens it to get rid of the popping, he may find it is over the MOT level. If you tweak it yourself just keep a record of how many quarter turns and in which direction you make, that way you can always revert to back to where you started.
