Fuel Filler Neck Question...

Post

Fuel overflows and spills out when I fill car right up with petrol

Hi guys,

When I fill my car right up with petrol, instead of getting a click and the pump stopping, it just carries on coming and spills out all over my shoes!!

Does anyone know why this is happening?? Could it be that the previous owner replaced fuel filler neck, or any other part, and maybe used wrong one??

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks very much.

That's an issue with the pump & not the car.

Does the handle click, and then a torrent of fuel spew out?

If so, it's probably a kink in the breather hose that runs from the top of the neck to the tank.. Mine does the same.
Stop filling every £1.50 or so, and then carry on.

Sounds like a pump issue at the station to me as Cero says. Try a different petrol station next time.  :)

Thanks for comments so far. It's happened twice, definitely at two different petrol stations… so cant be pump. Second time it happened, I was even being extra careful but it still got me lol. Handle doesnt click at all beforehand.

I stand corrected then. Get underneath and see if everything is where is should be and that there is no blockages or kinking. How old is the filler neck?

Most stations have 'removed' the click off facility, why? No idea, but I still say it's a pump issue and nothing to do with the car.

No idea how old the filler neck is tbh, was already on the car when I got it last year, and I have no paperwork for it.

Will get hubby to have a look underneath as you suggested.

Thanks guys

Always worth giving the filler neck a good clean/wash before and after the winter alot of mud gets stuck up there, quick blast with a garden hose then stick your arm up there (rather dirty job) but filler necks are expensive now and its a common rust problem, once dirt and water gets in the fuel system it courses alsorts of rather problems.
