Fuel Advice

My 1800 GTI has been standing for some time and still has leaded fuel in the tank. What have members done to get over the unleaded problem? Do I adjust the timing, put an additve into the unleaded or other suggestions please?

Seeing as leaded petrol was banned @1994(?) I would say drain any petrol that is in the tank and dispose of it. It will be 'off' and possibly cause allsorts of bad starting, poor running and erratic idling that will have you needlessly adjusting and replacing half the injection and ignition systems trying to fix.

All water cooled VW don't need lead but the GTI is setup to run on 97/98 RON so as Paul says simply run on V-Power/Super unleaded.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Thanks Guys, a simple fix thats what I was hoping for. Yes the car has been sat for some time and now I have the time to get it running as it should be. One problem the clutch is not working, time for another post.

Fuel drained out yesterday and shell V whatever added, seems to be running a little better. Question will the engine need to be tuned to run on this petrol??

you should be ok, but you might be able to dial in a tad more ign advance now you can use modern high ron fuels. just keep an ear open for pinking for a while.

dial the ignition advance back a little, if it was me I'd check all the timing marks line up, then set ign advance back to standard using the diamond mark on the flywheel
