Engine Seizure!

Engine Seizure!

Hello guys,

I've got a race-tuned 1870 8v engine to go into my '82 Mk1 GTI (otherwise standard), as I my old 1600 seized the day before it's MOT.

However, I don't want to put my new engine in, to have it seize as well.

The 1600 was violently ticking before it seized.

I am assuming the cause of the old seizure was a broken oil pump. But, could it be anything else?

I'm going to change the fuel filter, but I'm worried that the cause of the seizure was crud in the fuel lines, making the engine run lean.

Has anybody had a problem like this before?

Although there is corrossion on the bodywork around my fuel filler neck, there is no visible corrosion on my fuel pipe itself. Would it be an idea to change the fuel filler pipe, and the fuel lines? Or am I being over-cautious?

Shonky.

Not sure how a lean mix will cause seizure!!

So, you'd say probably oil pump?

You've never heard of fuel problems causing seizures…?

Let me know, and thanks

Dont see fueling being an issue. Fueling problem would affect how the engine runs or it just wouldnt run at all!?

Fuel problems in the worst case will cause exhaust valve burn and maybe high temps with some really way off timing.

But with decent piston spray from the oil system and effective head cooling a lean mix should not cause a seizure in my book.  But you live and learn

Of course a higher compression ratio, wild cam, redlining is a different matter  :D   but a standard engine????

Best thing to do is get you new motor in and make sure the mixture timeing and prssures are within spec - then you needn't worry.

Thanks for the advice guys.

You've put my mind at rest.

Yes the original engine was the bog standard 1600. Will get the new one in in the next week or so and let you know how it goes.

Cheers,

Shonky
