engine dies-suspect fuel starvation-long trips in COLD only!

dear all

this is a very odd and very annoying problem -
all hints tips and abuse at my probable idiocy appreciated.

this problem has only started up since i ran out of petrol a
couple of weeks back, and is the following:

when i go on long motorway journeys in this cold snap
the car starts showing fuel starvation symptoms and the engine inevitably
dies after some minutes.

take out inline filter,replace with new,wait a few minutes,start up,,off we go
again for a few miles and then start from scatch again…

over and over.

the problem is also exacerbated by any minor slope or, heaven forfend, a hill.
this all makes me think of $%^£ in the carb/fuel line/seperator.

what is double -odd is the second the weather warms even slightly the problem goes…
er….. water somewhere in the fuel line that's freezing in the cold?!?!?!
as i work nights the temperature is always COLD right now, and i dread the
car packing up every time i set out.
have not got Dan Dan the RAC man involved coz i bet he won't find anything wrong..
anyone else had anything similar?!?!?

Sounds like carb iceing, fuel freezing in the carburettor, check out the hot air feed form the exhaust manifold. When you stop the car it will let the carb heat up a little bit and then it will run again after a couple of mins.

I'm having a similar issue, but I know mine is related to the fuel pumps.  Again it started when I ran out of fuel.
It says about it on this page
