Engine cuts out when turning left?!

Just got my cabrio back having passed it's MOT after being off the road since November.

Strangest thing now happens, whenever I turn LEFT the revs drop and the engine actually cuts out.

It doesn't have to be a fast or sharp turn, any time the wheel is turned more than a quarter turn to the left the engine cuts out and splutters back to life when I steer it back to the right.

Anyone got any clues?

Put more fuel in!!

My old gti used to do the same

your fuel pipe could be getting trapped by the steering :dontknow:

other than that just make sure your journey only contains right turns and you should get home :D

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

Its a gti engine.

That sounds plausable A5OPY as it sometimes just splutters as if theres no fuel but I'd just put in seconds earlier and the gauge is just under half.

Googled a bit and some other sites are suggesting water in the tank?

Wish I knew a bit more about the gti engine or I'd be tinkering and trying to diagnose it myself :P

i would say maybe the lifter pump has packed in. take off one of the wires from the main pump under the car and turn the key 1 click/crank over, you should hear the in-tank pump run

new development, checked engine bay - nothing loose or getting trapped.

its happening when turning right now too, I'm thinking pump or perhaps sh*te in the tank since its been sitting for 6months.

Think its worth changing filters etc? Might get some of that redex stuff to clean out the system - see if that helps.

Changing filters will be necessary but normally there's still more dirt/rust in the tank, the filter won't gather it all. You could change the filters 10 times and still have issues with dirt/rust, the only way is to properly clean out the tank.

Redex is useless in this scenario, and I don't think it does any good on anything else as it happens, so save your money.

Yep, agree with rubjonny the pump is probably knackered by now too, so that will need changing as well as the filters.

But the main thing is, to clean out the fuel system thoroughly so it doesn't happen again.

finally got to the bottom of this… needed new spark plug leads :|

one wasn't getting a contact at all, replaced and all better! still a strange one but at least it's fixed.
