Delayed starting and cuts out randomly!

Just after sorting out my idle issue (thanks for all your help) the golf has now developed a pause when starting up and it cuts out when driving along.
When i go to start the car there can be a 2or 3 second pause before the car turns over and starts. Some times i turn the key and the ignition lights come on but nothing else happens!!! The second thing is the car has started to die randomly. The car is fine then suddenly it will coast down until it stalls itself and then wont start fo 3-5 mins. I will have my foot to the floor and it just feels it wants to go but cant. No lights show up on the dash during this but does obviously once it stalls. It will then start and be fine for a few days. It doesnt splutter it just coasts down and then stalls itself when it reaches 600rpm as it should. This morning it did it and as it was coasting down it suddenly kicked back in to life just as i was calls it a rude name! Anyone have a clue to what it could be.

Sounds like you might have sediment in your petrol tank have you put any old fuel in your petrol tank recently?

No expert on this but i had a similar problem a few years back and ended up flushing out my tank to find there was a leaf in there that had broken down and was blocking the fuel supply

It kept dying off in power then would stall would try for ages to start it then it would start randomly and run fine for ages then do it again out of the blue. There was also alot of sludge in the bottom of the tank god knows what the guy before me was putting in there.

You could take the back seats out and remove the top plate of the fuel tank be careful with the sender unit and dip the tank with a stick or similar
