damn fuel leak

Was leaving London to Norwich this afternoon, filled up tank near complete, fuel started pouring out from beneath car. Car did smell of petrol when i bought it and did think of minor fuel leak. But its the first time I fill up tank and leak started to stop at 3/4 tank full, so I've lost around less than 1/4 petrol.

I suspect a hole at the top of fuel tank. Dad suggests might be breather or lines.

I havent investigated yet but will find the problem soon

I had the same problem yesterday!!!

Hi mate,

Don't fret too much! (I did at first)

I just bought my 1.8 GTI Cab yesterday and pulled into the services to fill up. Filled to the brim and went to pay….when i came out, the car had emptyed most of the fuel onto the forecourt!!! OMG!

I managed to stop an AA man, who lifted the back seats and took off the black circular sender cover….

Hey ho….thats where the fuel was coming from, the seal had gone…thats all!!!

He took the lid off, drained the tank a little, then re-fitted the old seal…it will do until i get a new seal…

Hope this helps…???

Cheers

Darren

couple fo places to try

  1.  sender seal under back seats, remove cover plate also.(already mentioned).
sometimes seal gets twisted also new ones available from VW and cheap.

  2. the inlet and outlet pipe connections under this plate, if cable ties replace with good quality jubilee clips.

  3. finally fuel filler neck, check for any sign of corrosion, these are a known issue with the mk1 golf.

Hey there, wow similar to my story but I didnt realize at the petrol station. Im pretty sure its the seal like u said, thats probably had it and sending off fumes in the car.

Car ruined my plans for the long weekend-girlfriend didn't want to stay in the car, i was worried someone would chuck fags or drive on lit cigarettes, so eventually parked it on the side of the road. :banghead:

I shall get a couple.

Cheers

Will check option 2

Option3 - fuel filler neck seems ok
