One under the car in front of the drivers side wheel near the fuel tank and if you take out the back seat you will see a black round plate on the drivers side take the 3 screws out and you will see 2 fuel pipes and a electical connection, if you take the connector off and look at the plug if there is 3 connections there is a lift pump in the tank if only 2 connections then no lift pump.

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Hi

Have taken out the back seats but there is no inspection plate to be found.  I cannot check the drivers side rear as my jack has just broken so will have to get that first.

There are 2 flat plastic panels that hold the carpet down between the boot and the cabin. Unscrew and remove them and lift up. That should reveal the black plate. Think it's held in place by 3 screws IIRC.

If you look here, page 4, 1/2 way down pictures of cleaning the boot, the last 2 pictures you can see the rear seatbelts and the round black cover near the carpet. Undo the 3 screws and you will see the top of the fuel tank with a sender with 2 fuel lines and a electrical connection the lift pump is attached to this inside the fuel tank.
