Cleaning Fuel System

Hi, 1st proper post, so go easy!

My 1990 GTI cabby has developed a light misfire on acceleration and just does not pull well. The filler neck had been changed previously, so yesterday I started at the tank end and low and behold, the remains of the old fillerneck and all sorts of crud were in there. Cleaned that all away and today started on the pump and accumulator - nice install!

Eventually wrestled both pump and accumulator off the car and yet more crud

My aim is to check the fuel system from back to front (if that makes sense), and replace where necessary. When I had removed the pump and accumulator I found this;

It looks to be made of plastic and does not appear in my Haynes - anyone know what it is and is it likley to full of more crud?

Also what is the best way of clearing the fuel lines and where can I get the proper holding bracket and foam surround for the new pump? When I get the the metering unit, is that easy to clean out?

Cheers
Harvey.

the small plastic tank can be bought from VW, they are a common
fault as well, as basiclly it a mini swirl pot, and holds some crap too

When I get the the metering unit, is that easy to clean out and are there any other parts of the system that will need checking?

Right, got the metering head etc off - even more crud out of the fuel filter;

I'm amazed that the car actually ran!

Is the metering head a service item - can it be opened up, cleaned and put back together?

Cheers Harvey.
