My two previous golfs were an '89 1.6L Mk 2 and a '92 1.8L Mk 2.  With both I had trouble with the automatic choke, one was a problem with the vacuum unit you mention being U/S, for which I was quoted ?350 for a new one.  On both I replaced the auto choke with a manual one using a conversion kit from a local auto spares shop (not sure of price but definitely in the ?10-30 range).  It was a relatively easy job to fit it, with instructions supplied.  The most difficult bit was tuning it afterwards, but after that I had no snags.  8)

was he talking out ov his ass, just to sell me it?
is the auto choke, the bit with the two water pipes going to it??? cos the bit im on about is on the opposite side of the carb,(left hanside if your in front of car looking at engine)

As far as I'm aware all Golfs came with automatic chokes, but I stand ready to be corrected by the very knowledgable people here! :D

As I recall both my Mk2s had the hole at the back of the engine compartment already, but it was blanked off with a rubber grommit that I just had to pierce a hole in to pass the choke cable through.

There are various bits of the automatic choke system all around the carb, the instructions with the conversion kit clearly explained which ones needed to be removed/blanked, the rest I just left in place.
