I can really hear my new one from inside, but that might be due to the fact that I have no sound deadening, carpets, or seat in the back to muffle the noise!

If you can hear it quite a bit, you should also visually check it (and poke it around a bit) while the engine is running, to see that it is mounted correctly - worn or bent mountings (or crooked re-fitting during replacement) can mean that the pump-cover, or the last few inches of braided pipework, can be touching the car body, causing a noise. If it's not this, then it's just getting old, so get saving…

Are Cable ties OK… ops:
The output banjo on mine was touching the shell and it caused a teeth tingling vibration Is OK now though, but still held on with a jubilee clip and a couple of cable ties!

Fiddling the position of the fuel pump is free, but if you need a new one, because it's not touching the body (it's just knackered), they aren't cheap (close to ?100, I remember)

They've spent loads of money keeping these pumps quiet, by using rubber mountings, etc, to reduce what car designers call NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness). While the pumps might buzz a bit, it is the intention to cover it up as much as possible, and if it is audible inside the car, it's because the pump is buzzing more loudly than when it was made, ie: it's getting old, and worn.
I've just changed the fuel pump on my Audi 80 (same pump as a Mk1, but inside the tank). The old one was audible all through the car, but the new one cannot be heard at all, unless you put you head down by the sill, just in front of the the rear wheel.

i think i can hear mine when i turn the key in the ignition as it pressures up the system and when i have the drivers window open. not so easy to hear driving with the windows up! it can be more described as a hum than a buzz. it's done that for the last five years?

Sounds fine - if you can't hear it while driving, it's fairly quiet. Also, they go on for ages while making the buzzing noise.
I knew my Audi one was going, because when I first got the car (2003) you couldn't hear it, unless the rear seats were folded down, but towards the end (May this year), I could hear it as loudly as that when the seats were up. When I took it out of the tank, the area around it was covered in silver metal filings from the parts inside the pump wearing out…

its not always the pump that causes the racket, the mount is prone to rust and can cause vibration too if not mounted properly or corroded, dont worry about it making a racket you will know when it goes all together (but thats my logic, if it aint broke go pub instead) they are about 95 quid
