Post

Hello

Thinking of biting the bullet and getting a replacement tank and filler…the hesitations driving me mad and sure its the rust/crud in the tank- and whilst I'm their may as well do the filler' invade this is the cause.

Looked at gsf (£180 tank, £55 filler) and vw heritage (£110 tank, £99 filler) for the cabrio….anywhere else I should checkout?

Thanks

if the filler neck is the casue replace that first. tie some string round a magnet (so you can retrieve it) and chuck it inside the tank. clean it off every couple o days and eventually that should catch the worst of the grot. put a filter on the level sender inlet pipe, that will help catch some more of the grot

I'll ensure I give it a try tomorrow- adding the filters a good idea however where should I drop the magnet it on the string, by the sender? Also can I just drop a couple of magnets in the tank?

thru the level sender hole aye, i wouldnt leave the magnets in there forever as they could start breaking down themselves. an alternative is stick magnet to the bottom of the tank on the outside that'll catch and hold the rusticles in place so you can scoop em out

Right, inline filter in the sender and although I've not got the magnet in yet (eBay order as couldn't get one anywhere) after a 7mile drive the hesitation is back. Is this because the filters catching the grot from the tank? If so, should I replace it each time the hesitation comes back and eventually hope it cleans it all up?

yep basically keep an eye on the filter, if the tank is really bad its going to clog itself pretty often. you need to get a magnet on it at the earliest opportunity! anything will do old speakers are perfect donors for big strong magnets

Frost do a fuel tank lining system. 3 different chemicals that clean, stabilize the rust, then effectively re-line the tank with a layer. Me mate used it for his 2 Daimler tanks and it worked well.

You can use a tin top filler neck. it's much cheaper.

Hope this helps

Cheers mate- got a new tank but the problem persisted…ended up with the carb off and that seems to have solved the most enoying issue.
