Bad power loss clipper 1979....help please

hi ive been having this problem for about a month now……… sounds like this could be same problem….

(golf) convertible. Right after I shift it hiccups, sorta like the pump is picking up air. This only happens after I've had it on for a while, and the longer it's on the worse it gets. It'll then start to happen when I press the pedal fast, without any shifting. eventually getting to the point where it feels more like a clogged fuel filter and I start to worry about stalling out on the road. I have at this point replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, cap + rotor, coil, spark plugs and wires. Heat seems to make a difference.

Right had rac out they did sniff test and all ok …..carb was realy loose on the mount between the carb and manifold and pipes were old …so got newish carb from ebay and put it in a garage done a realy good job… fitted carb and all pipes re-tuned and now the choke works lol… but still car holds back when i go over 2500 revs….. and just cuts out more so when going up any hill ? maha so cant realy go over 50 boohoo…… never had a problem before carb came loose.

could it be fuel pump ?

Ive blown out fuel pipes ….

any help on this as im at my wits end sorry havent been on forum much…  :(  but i work away lorry driving long distance so its hard

hi back again……… the problem is back with vengeance lol can give more details now just hope someone reads this old post …..
car has been fine for couple months done about 10 trips dover to essex and local trips work and stuff all fine ….
had recon perberg carb fitted and re-tuned with new pipes..
new fuel pump….
no rust in neck filler..but using plastic screw on petrol cap… mmmmmm !!!!!
it seems the carb is running dry…. start engine and take foot off the pedal and not enough fuel getting into the filter so cuts out seems really bad when changing down to 2nd engine cuts out…..
ive tried blowing fuel lines out again as that fixed problem last time……any ideas please …..as don't wanna put it in garage as they cant seem to trace fault….. had sniff test on engine by rac twice and all ok…. sorry about bad grammar in dyslexic no jokes please

Which fuel pipes were replaced? Surely if they were replaced, they don't need blowing out again, unless you didn't clean out the fuel system from last time etc.

i disconnected the line from filter.. and blew back to tank so could hear bubbling in tank .. which seemed to do the trick never cleaned tank or fuel system wouldn't know where to start….. when i had carb done he replaced all pipes on and around but it still cut out ?what started the problem in the first place was the gasket from engine to carb never been the same since ..
some one told me that in the tank under seat sometimes the leaver thing rubs on pipe and causes a flap inside …lol dont know if its true….. that closes blocks when going up-hill or putting under pressure could be that …..
i have thought about bypassing fuel filter good idea..?
what about bypassing the resivoir is that easy enough to do … thanks for your help

Don't bypass anything, no need.

Sounds like you need to properly clean out the fuel system, which normally involves removing the fuel tank to do so, since its difficult to get to all the areas needing cleaning while its in place. It comes up a lot, it might even be mentioned in the FAQ area? If not, do a search and loads of relevant threads should pop up.

Look at, and if needs be, replace ALL the rubber fuel lines. There are 4 in total, return and supply at both ends.

as above you shouldnt need to bypass the reservoir but its easy to do for a quick test. run the output from fuel pump direct to carb and thats it! if car runs better then get yourself a new reservoir, and maybe new fuel pump too
