Backbox brake off!!!

second one now, backbox has just broken along the weld just before the actual box (if that makes sense)… fortuanately it was a minute after getting off the dual-carriage way.. no damage to the rear panel that I can see

now the cheeky bit.. I know wanted sections members only, paid up on friday so technically I'm a member again, but can't post there yet soooooo

anyone got a cheap supersprint backbox pretty local to Reading?

Sorry Mods, would have put it in the wanted section honest

also, why does my car hate having a backbox on there for more than 3-4 months  :dontknow:

sounds like a right beast now but don't think the police will like me too much, nor will my housemates when I leave for work at 6:45am

I have a spare sports backbox in good condition, but I am in Cheshire.

Only logical reason I can think that your car is getting through back boxes so quickly is that the rest of the exhaust is somehow mis aligned putting too much pressure on the welded join on the backbox. It's always a weak point on any car. I've had 2 or 3 different cars go in that place,

My MK1 though went in the middle. The previous owner for some reason only replaced the back box when it was pretty obvious the entire exhaust really needed doing, went about 2 weeks after I brought it, right pain the the a**e to fit as well.

I had the centre section replaced at the same time.

did notice at the last meet that the rear mount was starting to give up and stretch, should have got some uprated ones I guess  :banghead:

Cheers Paul, been looking on t'internet for backboxes, nowhere local that I can find yet that sells new, will let you know.. cheapest so far is near silverstone @ ?135  :(

Thats something else I did as well, replaced the exhaust rubbers with slightly stronger ones, stopped it moving around as much on cornering, as it was hitting something under the car at one point.

Did you get them from GSF? Mine did that! Then I got some from VW and now have no probs.

I got ATS to fit the Exhaust (brother was working there at the time) so he used they're own mounts  :( think I'll get some uprated ones and fit the replacement myself

The uprated mounts have chains inside them to stop them stretching…

What are your engine mounts like Phil? (Front cross member and rear gearbox mounts)
Excessive movement of the engine will put stresses on the exhaust. Normally the downpipe that goes, but if you have an old or cheap system, this could be the cause…  :dontknow:

not properly checked the engine mounts, apart from grabbing the engine and giving it a good pull and giving it a good rev with the bonnet up. didn't see much movement at all (about 1cm max.)

how else can I check them?  :dontknow: they're only ?10 each from GSF so might get them on my big spend coming up

had a better look yesterday, seems the 2 mounts at the back of the centre section are on they're way out as well…

Where can I get stronger exhaust mounts from? without spending a fortune?
