Are cabby and tin top fuel tanks the same?

I'm after a gti fuel tank and seen one for sale out of a cabriolet, does anyone know if this will fit an 82 tintop? Thanks.

No outlets are in different places but you can get it to fit if needed.

Not quite right, but there's so much misinformation out there its easy to be misled.

Start off, by calling them the right thing. There's 2 variations of hatchback tank, and 3 variations of cabriolet tank over the years. Best to use fuelling type and year to describe them, rather than bodyshell:

3 types of fuel tank:

up to 1985 carb
up to 1985 fuel injection
1985 on (both)

Note that hatchback/cabby doesn't describe them. Eg a 1984 GTI cabriolet has the same fuel tank as a 1983 GTI hatchback, but different than a 1987 GTI (which, since the hatchback stopped in 1984, would be a cabby).
