82 GL CABBY FUEL PROBLEMS?

Have owned the above golf now for about 18 years, trying to get the car back on the road, no luck!  The car turns over and sparks ok, fuel pumps out ok, but the car wont run.  We turned the car over and fed fuel directly into the carb, the car seemed to run for the amount of fuel directly fed into it.  Can anyone help and advise if they have had similar problem.  Thanks

Follow a logical 'won't start' in Haynes manual in the engine and fuel section . Difficult to tell with out a direct problem . Keep us posted

Hi got the car running a bit better forced air pressure into the main carb jet and carb cleaner, problem i have now the car does not tick over and stalls, the book says ignition timing or fuel/air mixture, got any ideas what it might be.
