wiring up a cigarette lighter???

hi guys, you'd probably thinks its as simple as wire from the ignition/head unit and an earth, but that dosent work and there is a third spade insert in the lighter. i want to do this safely as i do like my car. is the lighter faulty??

Don't take it to an auto electrician they will probably charge your days labour!

One cable is ground, one is 12v feed and one will be illumination. What are the colours or do you have a tester?

yeah but will it work without the illumination feed?? i ran a ground and a 12v to it and it didn't work…

Buy a cheap tester from maplins for £8 and use it to test the wires you're using, not worth messing about  guessing for what they cost.  Make sure the wires you are going to use are suitable for the job, don't just grab any 12v wire as you could easily overload it.
Will work fine without an illumination feed (grey/blue wire).

yes it'll work with just a live and earth, providing you used the right pins could be the socket is knackered but check first using a multimeter as above
