Wipers turn engine off!?!? help....

Hello!

I have recenlty bought a '82 Mk1 GTI 1.6. On the whole it has been very good but there are a few electrical issues which have started to appear.

The most concerning is that the other day when I put my wipers on it turned the engine off! There was a buzz coming from the fuse box and the wipers were particularly sluggish for a second or so then the engine turned off. After giving it a few minutes to gather its thoughts I was able to start it again but the same thing happens whenever I try to use my wipers.

Can anyone suggest the likely problem?

Someone suggested it may be a wiper motor on its way out or working too hard is taking more than its share of power and upsetting the fuel pump relay.

All help gratefully received. Allardice_uk@hotmail.com

Wet or corroded fuze box and or relays .

You need to check this area for any water ingress .

Any thing else not working ?

Electrical woes...

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. After further investigation I think water getting in may be the issue as the floor mat in the passenger footwell is getting a bit damp.

Any chance of an idiots guide to checking for leaks?

Is there any way to sort this out and protect against it I see it is a common problem and its keeping my Golf off the road

Other issues which may or may not be related…..

- Sometimes the indicators give up and I just get a solid green light on the dash
- Sometimes the wipers don't work and just cause a buzzing from the relay plate or turn the car off completely
- On one occassion turning off the fan switch seemed to kill power to the engine and turning it back on sorted it. This only happened once but was very weird.

Help needed pls….

Wipers....

On another unrelated issues I picked up some Bosch wipers for the Golf from halfords today and the brackets don't fit the arms.

They are clearly desgined for the right type of mechanism (i.e. has a hole for the nipple on the arm to slot into) but the arm is much wider than the bracket will take and they don't fit.

Any ideas??
