Wiper stalk???

Guys my wipers only seem to work on intermitent and the off position is this a wiper stalk fault as the stalk wont goe in to any other position..How many positions are there and can someone tell me are they up or down from the off position...my understanding (and correct me if i am wrong) is down to intermitent and up to permant wipe is there another speed? and is this an easy fix?...any help and suggestions as ever always welcome.

I think it's the same for all years : It should be downwards once from the off position for intermittent wipe (car spec permitting - yours obviously has it!), upwards once from off position for normal constant wipe, upwards again for faster constant wipe. If it was me I'd take the steering wheel off and make my way down to the wiper switch area to test the action of the lever and see if I could see anything that's stopping it moving upwards.  :?

not all had intermittant, but this can be acheived on any mk1 with the mk2 relay fitted and the plastic stopper removing from the stalk itself.  Had a pic a while back about it, but when i do mine i'll get some.

means you can swap all non-gti stalks about and all gti stalks about too.

Funny you should mention that, I just added an intermittent relay (no 19) to mine this morning thanks to previous info given by a member! I used relay 19 (191 955 531) not programmable but perfect for today's rain.  :P It also gave me the wash/wipe function which I didn't even think about (previously just had wash seperate from wipe).

Badvwboy  if you're wanting to have a look at the base of the switch, this might help. The end of the wiper lever forces itself passed 3 plastic ridges when you push it into the positions. It sounds like yours is being blocked by something so I would have a look inside. You just need to take off the steering wheel, unscrew 2 screws on the underside of the steering column to remove the lower plastic cover, pull out the two big multi pin connectors from underneath, unscrew the 3 screws on the top that hold on the assemblies and gently pull off the indicator switch section, take into account that the indicator lever holds onto the full beam switch with a lug near its base, this needs to go back how it was when you reassemble. Then all is revealed for the wiper lever. The area that has the ridges for the 3 switch positions is on the left, the white plastic blocker on cars without intermittent wipe is at the top left and pops out. You must have intermittent wipe though, so you shouldn't have one of these blockers. With any luck you'll see why your lever won't push passed the lower 2 ridges for the other two positions?
