Wierd??? I'm stumped??
Ok here goes!
I replaced the wiper motor which solved that problem.
Now I have a new one.
Engine running - switch headlights on - rev counter stops working.
Twiddle dash dimmer and rev counter moves up and down with dimmer twiddler.
Engine Off - faint oil light
Turn headlights on - oil light flashes - battery light comes on.
Replaced headlamp switch - problem still there.
Duh??
I'm ok with vehicle electrics and I know this is an earth fault, but where????
I'm stumped. I just have to solve this, fit fuel lines and it's ready for MOT
Please help me, pretty please
Cheers

Hmmm yeah I keep looking at that one.
It's an 82 3 door Gti.
Maybe I should make a new one?
There was a bit of damp in the fuel pump relay tho???
Thanks anyway

If you can get the starter to turn over then the engine earth is fine!
What isn't fine by the sound of it is the stupid instrument cluster earth connection which seems to crop up on this forum so many times with slightly different symptoms!
Have a look on the cam cover on the far right side as you are looking from the front of the car into the engine bay, there should be an earth connection coming out of the loom and onto a stud , this normally breaks when you do any sort of work on the engine, my one had exactly same probs as yours, seemed really weird as everything worked fine until engine running! somehow my earth connection had been connected to the oil pressure switch on the side of the head and the cable that should have gone there had snapped off in the loom! HTH
