Whats this??????????? and where can i get a new one from!??

Hi guys, im having some trouble with an intermittant fault on my 1.8gti at the mo.
when the engine warms up it will start hestiating, done the usual checks and have bascially run out of ideas!

could anyone tell me what this is and where i could get a new one from, to see whether if changing it helps me.
its at the back right hand side of the engine bay, behind the same bulkhead as the wiper motor and heater fan.
it seems to have a heat sink on it and is wired to the coil?

 heres a wider view!

and just for good luck, heres my actual car!!!! 8)

if anyone can help then i would be in their debt

 Cheers

It?s the switching unit/amplifier that is part of the electronic ignition on later MK1s. It receives its signal from the Hall Sender in the dizzy.

I think lots of 80s VWs use the same part so try looking in a scrap yard.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I thought it sent 4v to the hall sender?  :dontknow:  there's a good section on how to test that and the coil etc in the haynes manual

I think later golfs had an idle stabilisation valve that was electronically operated.

This would be for engine codes HT, RD, PL and 9A

I don't reckon yours will have one. So it might be the cold start valve leaking and squirting more petrol than is necessary in, or leaking injectors doing the same thing.

You could try disconnecting the valve (by unplugging the sensor from the coolant outflow pipe on the cylinder head).

Hope this helps

thanks for your speedy replies so far guys.
do you think that it could cause the symptons of my problem if it was playing up?

i always thought the cold start vavle only opereated on starting? (please correct me if im wrong)
the problem only occurs when the engine is warm and im driving, ie, if im stopped on the spot, it will rev away happily to its hearts content, but as soon as i pull away it will hesitate and miss. its not back firing or popping, so that says to me that its not fuelling, but obviously im not sure and more than likely to be wrong!

When you say usual check I assume Dizzy cap, leads and spark plugs? the coldstart injector could be firing when hot, faulty sensor breaking down due to heat and activating it.

If it idles ok then hesistates under load it could be week mixture or poor timing.

Just a few idea for you, Good luck

Sometimes the TCI will overheat if its not fixed down properly to the heatsink behind it.  It can then cause the problems you've described.  If you take it off, there should be some white paste on the back of it - heatsink compound or thermal grease.  I don't know if car parts places sell it though.  Big

You can get thermal grease/heatsink compound from Maplins.

www.maplin.co.uk

It's not expensive.

Right then!!!!
here we go. Ive now found the problem! and my car is running sweet again! :D
i was running out of ideas fast, so just out of interest i swaped over the rotor arm and hey presto, shes cured!
im hearing you guys say, "well why didnt you check that first!" well i only replaced the rotor arm about 2 months ago as part of a service i carried out on my car! so i put the old one back in. on closer inspection of the dodgey rotor arm it looked as if the striking plate was slightly off horizontal and perhaps not striking the contacts on the inside of the dizzy cap properly?
its all good though, cos it was a free fix! and we were on the brink of giving up and taking her to the garage!
Thanks for all your input guys.

Sorry i didnt get back to you scouse. every spare moment ive had has been in the engine bay of my car!!!!
you should put up a list of your stock of parts dude.

 Cheers

Try your leads first… replace them and see if it makes a difference.

I put up with the symptoms for 3 years and once the leads were swapped the hesitation stopped straight away.
