What is this and why is it not plugged in?

Found this today, just hanging loose.  Any ideas?  There are two parts

They wire in from here

I know it's a bit vague but seems odd for them to be hanging and I can't see anywhere obvious to plug into.

Hopefully you can see the part number here 171 972 509

Hi, the large plug should plug into the switch for gearshift indicator and reversing light found on the gear box. The other plug should have a corresponding female plug to join to.
As to why it isn`t plugged in ? Maybe had a new clutch and fitter forgot, or maybe prob with rev light or dash clocks :dontknow:
Hope that helps Sean

could be its had alter gearbox fitted weith only 2 pin plug for reverse switch. if so that plug will never go in and your big mpg gauge will always be dead

I think you may have the answer there. There is no connector that i can see, but i can see a 2 pin plug, and the reverse light is working.  That said the gearbox is looking very leaky and there is definitely something not quite right with it, although it seems to be working fine.  Think I might start to look for the correct box though and aim to replace it over the winter.
