what dizzy?... Leading onto car cutting out?!

hi all,
can anyone tell me if the below part number for a dizzy believed to be from a 1.8 gti will fit my 1.8 carb'd cabby?

BOSCH NUMBER 0 237 020 188
VW NUMBER 026 905 205 AG

thanks

Don't think that's from a GTI

Should have points rather than hall sender and is listed for CitiGolf, Passat and T2

Will physically fit I expect but I think you probably need a hall sender dizzy unless your cab is an early one

Hi mate,

how much you asking for them?

im under my bonnet as we speak, rotor arm and cap looks good, is the sender just the plug? because  that looks ok also.
bottom of dizzy look corroded a bit and also looks like its has an earth point which isn't  connected? should it have one?
basically my car cuts out on any journey longer the about 20 mins, the tacho just drops to zero then stalls. I've changed everything fuel related. am I on the right track with the dizzy?

thanks for your help

The fact that the rev counter goes would indicate that it is an electrical problem.

Does it cut out randomly or is it very repeatable?  Can you restart? straight away or after a time?

The cause could be coil, wiring (quite ofthen the hall sender plug can be dodgy) or the hall sender going duff (when they fail it's usially totally dead)

So I'd say:

Random cut out - check the wiring specifically the plug that goes on the dizzy.

Repeatable cut out - change the coil and see what happens

Doing myself out of a sale here!!

Give me call on Monday and I can sort out prices etc

well I thought I had solved the problem, as it was ok for three days<only short journeys>. then it cut out on a 30 min jouney, the cut out on me three times yesterday!
sometimes it starts straight away, other times I have to wait.
I looked at the sender plug and it looks ok.
what other wires shall I check?
should the dizzy have an earth connection on the outside of it?

thanks

The plug might look OK but the wires might be broken inside which will give you an intermittent/random fault.  Try usinga meter to check continuity while wiggling the plug - easier said than done.

Could be the hall sender but I doubt it.

The earch does not need to be connected - helps with interferrance with the radio.

ok, so went out last night, let it run for a few mins before driving off, drove for bout 2mins with choke on starts hesitating, nearly cutting out so I pull over push the choke in, it dies… start back up after a few mins oil light on flickering bright and dim, screeching noise under bonnet and every time I try and rev the revs drop?!

this could be something completely different<timming?> as if recenently fitted a weber, but the cutting out problem as in first posted has happened with previous carb also.

any ideas?

thanks

Screeching is probably the fan belt - get that tightened.

You gotta confirm if the problem is fuel or electrical or both.  Sounds more like fuel from your description.

Take out the fuel sender under the back seat - clean the pick up and look inside the tank to see if there is a lot of debris.  Stick a speaker magnet to the bottom of the tank underneath where the pick up would be.

Have you got a clear fuel filter - when it cuts out does this have any fuel in it?  Change the fuel filter if it's a bit ancient.

Finally by pass the swirl pot on front of the engine - pump straight to the carb - see if that has any difference.

Ive change the pump, carb, swirl pot (accumulator), engine bay fuel lines, fuel sender, fuel filter, cleared most of the tank with a magent(think there is a few very tiny particals left in there) and blown the fuel lines from tank to engine bay with a compressor. this is why i think it must be electrical.

if the timing is so far out would it do this or just run badly?

when it cuts out there is normally some fuel in the filter or its just filling up.

when it cuts out it the revs just normally drop untill it stalls.

Fair enough - lets look back at electrical

You changed the coil yet?

no I haven't, you think it could be this rather than dizzy/hall sender or ignition module or switch?

thanks

Well it's a very cheap and easy job to change to verify so worth doing esp if you have a good spare
