Water temp relay HELP for a caddy diesel with ABF conversion

Hi guy's,

I have got a caddy (diesel) with an ABF conversion and i am trying to understand how the water temp works, all i know so far is that it goes through a relay.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram?
Does anyone know what relay number it should be?
Can you bypass the relay?

HELP!!!!!

Cheers

Hi guy's,

Can anyone help? I've been looking into it a bit more and i don't even know if i need a relay.

Does anyone know the wire colours from the MK3 loom to MK1 loom and have a wiring diagram?

Cheers  Jase

the relay is for the level warning light only, this is the 2 pin thingy in the header tank. if you pull the relay the level warning is disabled and you can leave out the level sender wiring.

the dash temp sender is the small single pin one in the side of the head, plug your mk1 red/yel wire to this and you're away

Cheers John,

The only thing is i've got a 2 Pin sensor on the side of the head. Does one side need to go to ground/positive and the other side to red/yellow wire?

Thanks

the white 2 pin sensor is for the ecu, wrong rating for dash. if theres a chunky brown 2 pin one thats 5th inj thermoswitch for k-jet, again is no good.

you should have another black single pin sensor in the side of the head near the coolant flange. it must be there somewhere or at least some kind of sensor in the 2nd hole, otherwise you would have coolant pissing out the side ;)

John,

I have found the offending sensor, and it is connected to the red/yellow wire. But the temp gauge still doesn't work!! I have earthed the wire and the temp gauge works. Is the sensor faulty? Is there a way of testing if its working? Can you HELP?

Cheers

you've done the test already, if when you earth the wire gauge goes up to max you know wire and gauge are ok.  its worth noting that the abf has cvooler thermostat so it can take a while to warm up compared to a mk1/2 engine, but it should get warm after a few minutes of normal running.

if it still wont register anything then you'll need another sensor, if you have your old engine lying about you can pinch it off that, its exactly the same as the abf one :)

if not, any mk1 golf, early mk2 and any mk2/3 16v will have the sensor you need. if you buy new make sure it is genuine as pattern sensors are a bit pants

1st strep bridge the pins on the level sensor in the header tank. if that stops it you need a new level sensor.
if not then its the wiring or the control relay #42/43 above the fusebox. if you bridge the red/blue to the brown on the back of the relay socket that should stop the flashing. if not try removing the relay completely, that should stop the flashing. coolant gauge will still work, just your level sensing system will be disabled.
