Washers not working

Hey everyone

The link below shows pictures of 'my wife's' Mk1 Clipper Mabel which I bought her for Christmas  :D

Photo and Video Storage | Photobucket

The washers haven't worked since we got the car so I have had a look and need some help.

With the ignition on or engine running the wipers work correctly moving the stalk up and down but if the stalk is pulled back there is no washers the pump does not run. I have checked the continuity of the wiring from the multiplug on the column (green and brown wire). All good and the earth at the pump end is good.

There is 11 volts coming through at the pump multiplug when the stalk is pulled and the wipers sweep the screen as they should however if the pump is plugged in there is nothing  :banghead:

Can anyone shed any light on this problem??? I need to get this sorted quickly as we are taking the car to Brugges next Friday and don't fancy driving in this weather with no wipers  8O

well if your getting a voltage right at the pump when the stalk is pulled  the pump must be goosed or stuck.
Can you not feed it with a direct 12v feed just to check?

Already tried that and the pump works. Also got another pump and that does exactly the same... Really confused!!!

no wonder so am I  :banghead:

if you take the plug off the pump, bottle end and connect to the new pump, just dry outside the bottle as a test does that work when you pull on the lever? ie make a nice wirring noise.

if not and you still get a good voltage at that end of the cable only when you pull the lever back could be the connectors in the bottle end plug are corroded or simply not make a connection??
and you are measuring for a voltage across the two pins at the pump end plug I presume.

Yeah its really weird. Neither the old or new pumps work 'dry' and neither do the wipers if the pump is plugged in… If I unplug the pump and pull the stalk the wipers sweep the screen  :dontknow:

I'll measure the voltage with the pump plugged in. I have tried to get some wiring diagrams but not having a lot of luck at the moment. Cant seem to track down a Haynes manual either

Still scratching my head on this one  :dontknow:

As I need the car for the weekend trip to Bruges I have had to wire in a separate switch so that I at least have washers.

Managed to find a Haynes manual on eBay so should have that this week at some point which will give me the wiring diagrams and I can hopefully sort this out and get them working as they should

I'll update if and when I get this done

have you checked the earth cable to earth? if your getting the right voltage at the pump , i imagine it will be the earth.....hope it works

If you can read this, thank a teacher,

If its in English, thank a soldier.

Hey Goose this won't help but at least you'll know you are not alone with this problem. same here.

Something is dropping the voltage when the wipers AND the pump are triggered. my pump works and if I disconnect it the wipers work but together nothing … The only thing I have found is a little corrosion on the fuse panel plug (yellow one from memory), tried to clean it, tightened the pins as much as I could, plugged it all back and got a wipe & a bit of liquid and then nothing … unplug the pump and the wipers (the pull forward swipe) work again …

clean up the contacts on the wiper stalk, you can see them down the side of the astalk when the trims are off. could be they're dirty so only enough power to trigger the wiper relay but not enough to do the pump. also try earthing the brown wire to the battery, could be its just a poor earth.

to confirm if its a stalk issue, jump the red/green wire with 12v at the stalk end ;)
