1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet
The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

yes seach for alpine, blaupunkt, kenwood, trio etc in In-car-entertainment_GPS, then cassette players.
When I restored the GTI about 8 years ago there was no ebay so getting parts was scrapyards, ads in VW motoring or buy new.
I put a new Blaupunkt Dublin which was about the most suitable 'old' looking new one I could find. I think I might try and find a better looking period Apline or BP.

The LCD is too modern for 80-83 though, you are looking for something like a Hamburg with push button presets or band selection.

This is what you need:
As dubboy said it's a Blaupunkt Hamburg, I have one in good working order I might be tempted to sell!

It's got a din plug on the back, you can get connectors for ipods that run into that, I'm after one for my brother's bus.
They're available here for 28 euros but I reckon they'll be cheaper elsewhere.

Otherwise you can wire up an ipod to run straight into an amplifier and thru to the speakers, so the headunit isn't running as a slave unit for the ipod.
Lots of info on that is available on aircooled vw sites, as many peeps don't want to cut up the dashboards/ fill gloveboxes in for headunits.
Cheers,
Gav

I have that radio with the centre colsole speaker, i've just removed it for a cd player and some door speakers. Are they worth something? i was going to bin them at the weekend but forgot to put them in the car on a tip run so they're still in the garage.

I'm not sure if it would be worth loads, but I'm sure someone would part with a bit of cash to get their motor to original spec. I didn't pay too much for mine but it was in a pile of tat at an auto-jumble, so the seller wasn't the most knowledgeable really.
How does the centre speaker mount up?

theres two clips/tabs at the top which fit into notches already in the dash and then two screws at the bottom which go into the bottom half of the dash. It takes a single 6x4 speaker, the magnet sits in the cubby hole.

So what was the most common dealer fit stereo? Blaupunkt or somerthing else? I would like to fit a retro look FM radio/cassette back in my 83 campaign and perhaps Ipod it somehow. Anyone done this?
Also, how was the aerial done. Drilled into NS wing or was it just down to mechanics in each Dealership?
