VW Golf Rivage 1990 GTi Fuel Pump/Immobiliser problem

Hi there

Hmm.. interesting problem where the immobiliser turns off OK (light goes off and starter motor turns) however the Fuel Pump has stopped making the 'ssssshhhhhhm.' noise it normally makes when the ignition is turned on, and the car fires for a second, then dies I think due to fuel starvation.

I've checked the Fuel Pump fuse ("5. Kraftstofpumpe") in the fuse box and that's fine so any other suggestions where to look??

Many thanks

Alex

Fixed!

Yeah - suitably proud of myself - I've fixed the problem.

Blown fuel relay.

I read around the forums, studied wiring diagrams, fuse box layouts and relay positions and went investigating.

Firstly I checked all the fuses - there seems to be lots of different versions of what should be what but the post here from IanT and the site below seem definitive

So I checked all my fuses, moved the 30 Amp that was for some reason on position 5 (Fuel Pump) back to position 1 where it should be.

Then checked the relays. Fuel relay had a big brown burn mark on one of the legs which from basic 101 electronics normally = blown.

So… I read here that it is possible to swap a Horn Relay for a Fuel Pump Relay to stop any rev limiting, so with no replacement to hand, and I don't use the horn that much in central London, I swapped the Horn Relay into the now empty Fuel Pump Relay slot and voila! it works.

Now I'm off to order a proper replacement Fuel Pump Relay as I know it's not safe to have the fuel pump running all the time, but at least my lovely '91 Green Rivage Cabriolet is :-)
