VDO Guages in a MK1 ???
Can anytone tell me if all Mk1 GTI's had the VDO guages as fitted as standard. I have my centre console with the blank plastic plate fitted, so not sure if i need them to carry on with the resto ? Mine is a 1982.
Please advise.

All GTIs had an oil temperature gauge as standard, but that was it. The series 1s have a 2 instrument centre console and one of them is filled with the oil temp. 1.6 series 2s have a 3 instrument centre console with 1 filled by the oil temp. Later cars (ie 1.8, with MFA) have oil temp on the MFA so didn't have the analogue gauge.

Ive had a quick look on eBay for a set, BUT, some seem different to others, ie, some say they are off a Mk1 but they look like off a Audi as there are differences. Can anyone please send a picture so I know what I need to get ??? Please….
As said, I have the centre console but the plastic trim where the guages go has been cut out, badly, then a blank "original VW" card over the top. Just want it back to original…..
My car is a 1.6 GTI registered in Nov 1982, green.

The only one that could be properly described as being off a Mk1 is the oil temperature gauge.
Anything else is simply false, since VW never offered extra gauges as an option from the factory. The dealer's did, as a dealer-fit option, and plenty of people have transferred the similar gauges from Audis. They might have been fitted to, then removed from, a Mk1 Golf. Does this make it "off a Mk1"?

…..to allow aftermarket gauges to be fitted!
If you want it original, you only need the oil temp gauge - do you have this, or has someone removed it?

ALL guages have been removed. I have a box of bits, but I cant find anything. As said i did find a plastic blank plate, original VW, but the centre console has has the 3 hole plate cut out badly, so a DIY job i think.

Forgot to add, a series 1 Mk1 GTI would have also had a clock in the centre console, filling all the holes. The series 2 had a digital clock on the dashboard so it didn't need an analogue clock.
Both my cars have extra gauges, so I can't give you pics, but I'm sure someone else has a fairly standard one.
