Urgent, Reversing light wiring help!

Evening guys.

Apologies for the long post but please bare with me on this one. Basically my reversing lights are not working and i have been trying to figure out why.

First of all i am not sure which car my gearbox is originally from, but my car is a Mk1 Golf 1983 Gti tintop. Please see the first picture for the reversing light switch. (See Below)

I have tested the switch and it works when reverse is engaged. I have also checked the fuses (Fuse 15 I think) and the fuse is ok. I have also replaced both bulbs just in case.

The problem i have is locating the wires to connect to the switch as the previous owner has done a lot of rewiring.

The second picture is the spare connector attached in series to the brake light switch and i'm fairly sure this is not the right one to use (See below)

I can see another block of 4 wires, two of which go into the connector pictured below and two which at the moment are just taped up. (See below)

I suspect that the connector was originally for the MFA and the other 2 wires that are connected together at present should be the ones for my reversing lights?

Any help is appreciated and apologies for the essay.

Cheers

Ash

Hi Ash
no its not some cars had 2 brake switches .

The clump of wires with tape is indeed the reverse light and Mfa Fifth gear wires ….

According to my wiring diagram you need …Black and the Black/Blue wires for the reverse switch

The Mfa wiring has been removed due to problems probably  :dontknow:
But if you do a search 'lhasa' on here posted a fix using MK2 bits available from GSF cheaply

Cheers Chudd……

Thanks guys

Chudd,

Thankyou so much for the help!! I bought a new switch from GSF today followed Lhansa's tips and hoorah i now have a working reversing light and my MFA is reading again.

Only one light is working, but at least it works at all.

cheers

Ash :)  :)

Hey people,

I've got a 16v engine in my Golf which is attached to the original Mk1 8v box. It has the 4pin plug (male side) for the reverse light, however in changing the wiring about , i now have 2 spades for the reverse light switch ( as per a Mk2 16v), which will attach to the 16v box switch. I have a 16v box switch, and fitted it ( dunno if its the right place, its to the left of the original 4pin switch, and goes in place of what appears to be a blanking bolt).

The switch works fine HOWEVER!! its the wrong way round ie, reverse lights come on in the forward gears on go out which reverse is engaged.

By the nature of the 2pin 16v switch, reversing the wires won't make a difference. I don't have the original switch fromt he mk1 ( with the female plug).

Any ideas anyone? i don't know how to get round this one!
