right then im in the middle of rebuilding my gti cabrio  

just got the dash back in and fitted the wires to the light up gearnob (its not as bad as it sounds  ops: )and when i switch the lights on its all ok but occasionally when i switch it back to side lights the fuel pump energises  :?  8O ,like it does when you switch on the ignition  

any ideas  :dontknow:

has this started since youve had teh gearknob fitted?

Sounds like you've inadvertently created a bistable circuit. You probably have a relay in there somewhere, when you energise the relay, it switches something on which then holds the relay open even when you switch the thing off, which originally switched the relay on.

If my ignition is off and the fan is switch on, then I pull the high beam, My fan comes on occasionally…I put it down to a poor earth, so cleaned them all and everything is ok.

Basically eletricity will find the easy way to earth, ie least resistance. Pauls suggestion is spot on, basicaly the relaiy is enegised then the power from your iluminated gear knob is using that circuit as an earth and holding the fuel pump on!

If you disconnect the gear knob does everthing work correctly?
